Freelancing can change your life. It doesn’t matter what stage you’re at, you should always aim big and have ambitions to be at the very top. This doesn’t happen overnight but it is important to understand that you need to have a vision for yourself and you should always zoom out to reflect on your path and trajectory.
As a freelancer, it can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle of finding clients and completing projects.
But if you want to achieve financial success and become a millionaire (why not?), you need to have the right mindset. This means shifting your focus from short-term goals and making quick money to long-term planning and building a sustainable, successful business. For the purpose of this article, we’re going to assume that your goal is to become a ‘millionaire’. Here’s what you need to keep in mind as you work on developing a millionaire mindset as a freelancer.
Before you can start working towards becoming a millionaire, it's important to have a clear understanding of what that means to you. Do you want to reach a certain income level? Do you want to have a certain amount of savings or investments? Having specific, measurable goals will help you stay focused and motivated as you work towards achieving them. Write this down somewhere you’ll see every day. Maybe on your desk, or maybe on your closet. But don’t lose sight of the goals you set for yourself.
To build a freelancing empire, you need to continuously upskill. You need to be very self-aware and also know what the top 1% looks like. For example, a graphic designer needs to know how he compares with designers whose work ends up displaying at New York Time Square. A developer needs to know how far he is from getting hired at Uber or Airbnb. Sure, a regular stream of work will take up most of your time but you have to find time to consistently improve and upskill. This is easier said than done but the top 1% earners in their domain made this investment in themselves in order to stand out.
A growth mindset is the belief that one's abilities can be developed and improved through effort and learning. Do you have a growth mindset? You should ask yourself these questions: How often do you seek out feedback and consider it as a valuable source of information for improvement? How often do you attend freelancing webinars and learn from those at the very top? When was the last time you stepped out of your comfort zone and learnt a skill that added value to what you already know? Millionaires are obsessive about perfecting their craft and having an exponential growth curve. You should have the same goals for yourself.
Having a strong network of contacts can be incredibly valuable as a freelancer. These connections can help you find new clients, learn about industry trends, and get advice and support. It's important to be proactive about building your network and to make an effort to stay in touch with your contacts. LinkedIn is the best place to invest time in building a network. Follow people you admire and engage with their community. Put out your own perspective in a way that people value. Out in the real world, this could also mean joining professional organizations or attending freelancer events at coworking spaces.
Remember, you’re in it for the long game. It sounds textbook, but having a positive attitude can make all the difference when it comes to achieving success as a freelancer. This means staying optimistic, even when things don't go as planned, and focusing on the things you can control rather than dwelling on the things you can't. It also means surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people who can help you power your way. Becoming competitive means staying ahead of the curve and everyone has their own process of getting there. It can be challenging when things are slow but perseverance pays off in the long run.
"A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals." - Larry Bird
To build wealth, it's crucial to have financial discipline. This means keeping track of your income and expenses, creating a budget, and making smart financial decisions. It's also important to start saving and investing as early as possible, so you can take advantage of compound interest. As a freelancer, you may need to be especially diligent about managing your finances, since you don't have the security of a steady paycheque.
