As a freelancer, one of the biggest challenges you'll face is finding new clients. Sure, building a strong online profile and crafting compelling cover letters definitely help and are a must for bagging the right clients. However, there are plenty of other ways to generate leads and land new work aside from this. In this blog, we'll explore some different and out-of-the-box methods for freelancers to increase their clients and grow their businesses!
Networking is a powerful tool that can help freelancers connect with potential clients and grow their businesses. This is especially true in Pakistan which has a rich gig economy and a plethora of people from different walks of life all working as freelancers. Attend networking events in your industry, join professional organisations, and engage with other freelancers and business owners on social media. Not only will you meet new people and make valuable connections, but you'll also be able to showcase your expertise and build your brand!
One way to stand out as a freelancer and attract more clients is by building your presence through increased involvement in your community. Volunteer your time and skills to local non-profits, schools, and other organisations. Not only will you be doing good for your community, but you'll also be building your professional brand and putting yourself in front of potential clients. You never know who might need your services and where the right clients may be looking and by getting involved in your community you will be putting yourself at the centre of a potential client’s radar!
We get it, cold outreach can be awkward and uncomfortable. Weird as it may feel, it can actually be a pretty effective way to find new clients.
Referrals are a powerful way to get new clients, and a referral network is a great way to build them.
By forming a group with other prominent freelancers and business owners within your industry, you can collectively create a referral network. This network will come in handy when you're too busy or don't have the right skills for a project because you can refer it to someone in your network, and vice versa. This way you both get more business, help each other out and establish yourself as knowledgeable and reliable freelancers.
Attending conferences and trade shows is a great way to meet potential clients and showcase your expertise. While trade shows aren’t as popular in Pakistan, there are several virtual and in-person conferences, you can attend including international ones.
Attending these will not only allow you to get some meaningful insights through keynote speeches and sessions, but you'll also be able to network with other attendees, and of course, set up your own booth if you have a product or service to sell.
One unique way to increase your clientele is by using your existing clients. The client relationships you’ve already developed as a freelancer can be a great source of new business.
A strong social media presence is key to building a brand that will help spark the interest of potential clients. Take special care to invest in the social media platforms that the bulk of freelancers in Pakistan use (for Pakistan specifically, that would be LinkedIn). Have a detailed bio that outlines your skillset and major projects you’ve worked on, upload a clear photo of yourself and make sure to keep your socials consistently updated with tips you’ve learnt throughout your freelancing journey and projects you’re working on!
Make it easy for potential clients to find you by optimizing your website for search engines. Use keywords in your site's content and meta tags that match the services you offer, and make sure your contact information is prominently displayed. And if you have the budget, invest in some ads (Google, Facebook, LinkedIn) that will help you reach more people quicker!
