Since we’ve covered the broader basics of freelance profile building online in part 1, here are some smaller, more specific things to consider. These are mainly for putting together the finishing touches on your profile

Using skills tests where you can

Platforms like Upwork offer a variety of skills tests that freelancers can take to showcase their abilities and increase their credibility on the platform. Take relevant skills tests to demonstrate your expertise and improve your search rankings. There are several reasons why this is beneficial. By taking and passing relevant skills tests, you can show clients that you have the necessary knowledge and abilities to complete their projects successfully. You’ll be assessed separately from more inexperienced freelancers who may not have taken these tests or may not have performed as well.

Secondly, some projects may require or prefer freelancers with specific skill sets or certifications. By taking relevant skills tests, you can increase your chances of being hired for these types of projects. Thirdly, taking skills tests can also help you identify areas where you may need to improve your knowledge. This can help you put together a plan for ongoing professional development and improve your overall performance as a freelancer.

However, it's important to note that skills tests are not a guarantee of success, and they should be used in conjunction with other strategies for building your reputation and attracting clients. It's also important to choose skills tests that are relevant to your specific skills and expertise, rather than taking tests that are not relevant or may not accurately reflect your abilities.

Setting your hourly rate and availability

Using these settings, even though they may seem small, can help you establish your value as a freelancer. By setting a rate that reflects your expertise and the value you can provide to clients, you can demonstrate that you are a professional and highly-skilled freelancer. Similarly, by setting clear availability hours and sticking to them, you can show clients that you are reliable and committed to delivering high-quality work on time.

Utilising all of your platform’s settings

Upwork and Fiverr offer various smaller settings that can help you improve your profile and increase your chances of getting hired. Here are some settings to consider:

Review, review, review

Ultimately, the key to a strong profile is conducting a thorough review. We recommend considering the following factors regularly and revisiting your profile frequently to keep improving the content you put in there. This is because the competition in the freelance space is always evolving, and it’s important to stay up to date with the latest trends:

  1. Make all your content about your clients: Your profile should focus on how you can help clients solve their problems, rather than just listing your own qualifications and experience. Make sure your profile highlights the benefits you can offer clients.
  2. Be consistent with your strongest skills: Highlight your strongest skills throughout your profile in your title, skills section, overview, and work history. Use each section to provide evidence of your expertise.
  3. Establish trust and confidence: Complete all sections of your profile, and make sure to proofread each section carefully to avoid grammatical errors. Updating your profile regularly can also help build trust with clients.
  4. Be concise and straightforward: Use clear, simple language to convey your message. Avoid using jargon or complex technical terms that might confuse clients.
  5. Track your reputation: Take action on non-active contracts to maintain a good reputation, and if you are Top Rated, make sure you flaunt that Job Success Score (JSS).
  6. Keep your materials visible: Link other professional accounts in your profile settings to help Upwork and Fiverr match you better to jobs, and keep your responsiveness score high by replying quickly to invitations and messages.
  7. Update your availability: Make sure to update your profile visibility to "available" when you are, so you receive invites. When you're not available, set your profile to "not available" to avoid hurting your responsiveness score.
  8. Get feedback: Before publishing your profile, ask friends to give you feedback. You can also read your profile out loud to make sure it flows well and sounds like you.
  9. Be original: In summary, being original in your freelancer profile is important because it can help you stand out from the competition, build credibility and trust with clients, and increase your visibility online. Language and content are crucial components of an effective freelancer profile, and should be carefully crafted to showcase your skills, expertise, and unique strengths.
